Azeri president’s aide: Status quo on Karabakh could spark fresh war

A senior Azerbaijani official warned Thursday that the lingering status quo in the conflict with Armenia over Nagorno Karabakh could spark a new war in the region, saying Azerbaijan would avail of all means to restore its territorial integrity.
Presidential Administration department head Ali Hasanov told reporters that Azerbaijan has repeatedly warned that it could resort to military action to resolve the long-standing dispute, but the international community has sought "to sway it from this path".
"But the Azerbaijani president has repeatedly said that Azerbaijan’s patience has limits," Hasanov said. "If this status quo goes on forever, we will not be able to wait. Azerbaijan will avail of both legal and other means at its disposal to restore its territorial integrity."
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war in the early 1990s. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces since a ceasefire was signed in 1994. OSCE-brokered peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
