The United States will purchase construction supplies, canned goods and equipment from Azerbaijan for their further delivery to Afghanistan, according to US Charge D’affairs Donald Lieu.
Addressing an Azerbaijan-U.S. procurement seminar for Azerbaijani contractors and suppliers, organized by the US European Command and the US Transportation Command in Baku on Friday, Lieu said the Azerbaijani government had requested the U.S. mostly to buy more goods from the country, and the current event was a response to that request.
Explaining the importance of buying Azerbaijani companies’ goods, which aims to reduce transportation costs to Afghanistan, the US charge d’affairs said Washington intended to purchase commodities from the region to promote its peacekeeping efforts in the post-war country.
"We believe that Azerbaijan has quality goods to sell and we will buy goods worth millions of dollars from the region to support the Afghani people."
Lieu said purchasing goods from the South Caucasus republic would be swifter and less expensive. "This business will be beneficial for both Azerbaijan and the U.S."
Patrick Spats, deputy of the political affairs aide of the US Transportation Command, said the US representatives had already paid visits to Azerbaijan and acquired some information.
"We hope that the goods will be of high quality. It is hard to say at this point what volume of commodities will be purchased. Certainly, the bulk of the purchases will depend on their quality," Spats said.
The seminar, organized by the US embassy in Baku, was held in conjunction with the US Chamber of Commerce and with the support of the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry.
An Azerbaijani delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov is due to visit Afghanistan May 16-18 to assess the current situation with the provision of non-military assistance to the country and discuss new cooperation opportunities.
While in Afghanistan, the Azerbaijani officials will also visit the 90-people-strong detachment where the country’s peacekeepers are serving as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).*
