Azerbaijan considers three options of connecting Baku Bay

Three versions of connecting the two ends of bay of Baku are under consideration in Azerbaijan, deputy transport minister Musa Panahov told journalists on Monday.

The first version is a possible bridge construction, the second an underwater tunnel and the third, both models conjointly, said Panahov. The protocol on preparing the technical, economic substantiation of the construction of the bridge over Baku Bay was signed by the ministry and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) at the end of 2009. By preliminary estimates, the cost of the construction of the bridge through Baku bay is about $2.5 billion.

The Korean government allocated 1, 6 million dollars towards the realisation of the KOICA project in 2009-2011.

The extension of the main part of bridge which is planned to be stretched over Caspian sea from Shikhov to the Zig settlement will be 13.5-15 km. With communications, the length of the bridge which will be joined to the Baku highway can reach 26 km. This way the bridge will become the second longest in the world after China. The construction of the bridge should be completed within five years.

The extension of the tunnel which is to run across the width of the Baku seaside boulevard is 4.2 km.

According to the project offer, the part of the tunnel which is 0.9 km will be box shaped and the rest will be in an arch.

The tunnel will be six lane (three on one side, three on another side).

According to the project, the tunnel will be situated at a depth from 1.8 to 5.5 metres. The tunnel will have two exits on Neftchilar Avenue and will start at the Bayil settlement and finish at Zig.
