U.S. says Georgia should overcome many challenges on way to European integration

The Georgian authorities will have to overcome many challenges on the way to European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, Eric Rubin stated about this at the joint press-conference with Georgian Parliamentary Speaker David Usupashvili after the bilateral meeting on Monday.

Rubin voiced his admiration to Usupashvili's leadership and the leadership of his team in the Parliament.

"We know that they've had many difficult challenges in recent months. We appreciated the work that he had done together with leaders of the opposition on the resolution on Georgia's diplomatic foreign policy and security orientation, on its Euro-Atlantic aspirations and we were strongly supportive of efforts at constitutional reform that are aimed at ensuring the life and stability of this constitution," Rubin said, civil.ge reported.

In turn, Usupashvili voiced his team's main message saying that "after coming into power of the new authorities, relations between Georgia and the United States will only change into positive direction."

He stressed that during the meeting at the State Department, he has received assurances of support for the Georgian integration to the NATO and strengthening of the U.S.-Georgian relationship.

According to Usupashvili, they also touched upon the issue on constitutional issues, however not only limiting the president's power, but also improvement of the Constitution in general.

During his first visit to the U.S. after becoming the Parliamentary Chairman, Usupashvili also met with senior officials the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs,Marie Yovanovitch, and the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Thomas Melia
