SOCAR Energy Georgia, Azerbaijan's energy giant SOCAR's daughter company operating in Georgia, provides assistance in the aftermath of floods in Tbilisi, company's CEO Mahir Mammadov told Trend on June 15.

"The staff of SOCAR expresses sincere condolences on the loss of lives during the devastating floods in Tbilisi," he said.

He noted the company has allocated 10,000 liters of petrol for the Tbilisi Municipality and 50,000 Georgian lari to eliminate the impact of the natural disaster.

"The company immediately set up headquarters, and staff began to collect essential items to help those suffered from the floods," the CEO added.

A devastating flood that swept through central parts of Georgian capital Tbilisi claimed the lives of at least 12 people, while 24 people remain missing.

The natural disaster lasting throughout the night on June 14 left dozens of families without shelter, damaged major roadways, and destroyed a significant part of the city’s zoo.

The Vere River, which runs through Tbilisi’s Vake and Saburtalo districts, was dammed up by a large landslide caused by heavy rainfall, on Tskneti-Betania road outside Tbilisi. The blockage then burst, sending torrent of water down towards the capital city.

The Finance Ministry has preliminary estimated the flood damage at over 40 million lari (approximately $18 million).

SOCAR Energy Georgia is engaged in retail and bulk selling of fuel in Georgia, importing of petroleum and liquid gas, construction of oil terminals and warehouses.
