Tehran, Saudi Arabia calls for opening new chapter in ties

Tehran and Riyadh, which have had sour relations for over 30 years, are now committed to open new page in their political relations.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian held a meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal in the western city of Jeddah on August 26.

The two sides discussed regional issues, including threats posed to the Islamic Ummah such as the Israeli regime's actions against Palestinians in the war-torn Gaza Strip. The two sides have called for stability in the Middle East.

Tehran and Riyadh have recently voiced intentions to improve relations between the two key players in Middle East.

The two sides stressed the expansion of ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

This is the first high-level bilateral talks between the two countries after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani took office last year.

In March, President Rouhani underlined Tehran's determination to improve ties with neighboring Muslim countries, saying cooperation between Iran and Saudi Arabia would be vital for regional security.

Iran and Saudi Arabia have gone through many phases in the history of their relations: from a strategic alliance in the years before the Islamic Revolution to a cold war in recent years.

The relations between the two countries were severed after the change of regime in Iran. Currently, the two key Middle East players are divided on a number of regional issues such as the situation in Bahrain and Syria.
