State Dept's report on Azerbaijan based on nonobjective sources, MP says

The annual report of the U.S. Department of State isn’t based on the data of objective sources.

This statement was made by Aydin Mirzazade, the member of the Azerbaijani Parliament and deputy chairman of Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee on June 26.

Commenting on the criticism in the annual report of the U.S. Department of State on human rights in Azerbaijan, Mirzazade told Trend that the sources, assessing the real situation and objectively covering the occurring processes, remained outside the attention of those who drafted the report.

The MP said that accusing Azerbaijan of violating human rights is fundamentally wrong.

“Human rights are enshrined by law in Azerbaijan. There is freedom of speech, press and political activity in Azerbaijan,” Mirzazade said, adding that Azerbaijan is an open society.

“Any ideology can be freely used in the country, except for those that are prohibited by the law. The country has an extensive network of NGOs, and the government can be openly criticized,” he noted. “After all the mentioned, there are no grounds to accuse Azerbaijan of violating human rights.”

Mirzazade believes it is unfair to estimate the society and the real situation by protecting several persons who have violated the law.

"Surely, if the representatives of the U.S. State Department visited Azerbaijan, they would have been formed a quite different view," he noted.

The MP also regretted that recently, Azerbaijan has been accused of violation of human rights and this anti-Azerbaijan campaign is likely being controlled from a single center.

"The European Parliament and the State Department try to raise the same question. After visiting Azerbaijan and getting acquainted with the real situation, their statements become otherwise. Apparently, the independent policy of Azerbaijan, a serious attitude towards national values bothers a number of people. Such criticism will not force Azerbaijan to turn from the path of democracy and human rights, which has been chosen by the country," he added.
