Data transfer speed between Institute of Physics center, CERN to increase

By Nazrin Gadimova

The speed of data transfer between the computing center of the Institute of Physics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) will be increased to one gigabit per second before the end of 2013, the Institute of Physics said on August 20.

Increasing the capacity of the data network will allow DATA-center of the institute to become a full-fledged member of the European distributed network in the framework of the European Grid Infrastructure project (EGI).

Currently, the speed of data transfer between the computing center and CERN is 45 megabits per second and the computing power of the Institute of Physics' DATA-center is used for processing the information flow of the European organization.

The distributed network within the EGI project consists of 350 resource centers located in 35 countries.

In the long term, in addition to processing information flow of CERN, the Institute of Physics will have the opportunity to use the resources of the participating countries for the solution of time-consuming tasks meeting the national interests in such fields as carrying out geological surveys to identify energy resources, medicine, etc.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research is an international organization whose purpose is to operate the world's largest particle physics laboratory. Established in 1954, the organization is based in Geneva. CERN's main task is to provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research. Numerous experiments have been carried out at CERN in the frame of international collaborations. It is also the birthplace of the World Wide Web.
