Parliament’s term may be less than five years after snap elections

Term of office of the Azerbaijani Parliament [Milli Majlis] elected on a snap elections may be shortened and be less than five years.

The relevant decision was taken by the Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan, as it approved the draft amendments to the Constitution on July 25.

In this case, the next election to the Parliament is held on the first Sunday of November of the fifth year of the term of the convocation of the parliament, elected in the snap election.

The legislative poll is held every five years on the first Sunday of November, according to the law.

Additionally, according to the proposed amendments, persons who have the right to participate in the parliamentary elections (at the age of 18) can be elected to the Parliament. Previously, the age limit for being nominated for the participation in parliamentary elections was 25 years.

The Constitutional Court concluded that the changes proposed to the Constitution by President Ilham Aliyev are in line with the requirement of the Constitution of Azerbaijan.

Earlier, Ziyafet Askerov, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and chairman of the parliamentary committee on security and defense said that the proposed changes do not cut the power of the Parliament but offer new mechanisms for its normal operation.

President Ilham Aliyev has signed a decree on holding a referendum on amendments to the country’s constitution on September 26, 2016.
