Foreign investments in Georgia decrease by 35pct

Foreign direct investment in Georgia in 2018, decreased by 35 percent compared with 2017 year. This was announced at the briefing by the executive director of the National Statistics Service of Georgia “Sakstat” Gogita Todradze, Trend reports.

In 2018, the country received an investment of $ 1,232 million. At the same time, in the fourth quarter of the year, the volume of investments amounted to only $ 197 million.

Todradze named several reasons of decline in investment, such as the completion of the construction of the gas pipeline, the transfer of several enterprises to the ownership of Georgian residents, as well as the reduction of liabilities to non-resident direct investors he decline in investment.

At the same time, according to statistics, the most investment in Georgia came from Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom in 2018.

At the same time, investments from Azerbaijan have almost halved, due to the completion of the main gas pipeline project.

According to official statistics, the volume of investments from Azerbaijan in 2018 amounted to $ 240 million, from the UK - $ 203 million, the Netherlands - $ 167.9 million, the USA - $ 103 million, Panama - $ 74.7 million, The Czech Republic - $ 65.4 million, South Korea - $ 63.2 million, Russia - $ 60.1 million, other countries - $ 181.5 million.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the financial sector leads in investments ($ 277.9 million), transportation is in second place ($ 209.9 million), and energy sector ($ 157.2 million) is in third place.
