Egyptian protesters reach presidential palace
Tens of thousands of Egyptians have demonstrated against
President Muhammad Morsi outside the presidential palace in Cairo,
Radio Liberty reported.
Police on December 4 fired tear gas but later drew back, allowing
protesters to reach the palace walls.
The protesters are calling for Morsi's downfall over his backing of
a draft constitution written by his Islamist allies and over nearly
unrestricted powers he decreed for himself two weeks ago.
The protesters have described their demonstration as the "last
warning."
Reports quote aides to Morsi as saying the president left the
palace during the protest through a rear door.
Protests against Morsi also took place December 4 in Cairo's Tahrir
Square, Alexandria, and elsewhere around the country.
Morsi has called a referendum on December 15 to approve the
controversial constitution, which critics say falls short of
guaranteeing the rights of women and minorities.
