The ceasefire on the Armenian-Azerbaijani contact line was broken from different directions 64 times last night, the Azerbaijani defense ministry reported on June 23.

The armed forces of Armenia, located in the Berkaber village of Armenia`s Ijevan region opened fire at the positions of Azerbaijani armed forces located in the Qizilhajili village of the Qazakh region.

Also, the Azerbaijani positions took fire from the positions located in the villages of Qorgan, Qarakhanbayli, Ashagi Veysalli, Ashagi Seyidahmedli, Qoradiz of the Fizuli region, Shikhlar, Yusifjanli, Shuraabad, Marzili, Bash Gervend of the Aghdam region, Chayli of the Terter region, Kuropatkino of the Khojavand region, Mehdili of Jabrail region and the nameless heights.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
