Johns Hopkins University delegation visits Agdam region
A delegation of the Johns Hopkins University visited the Agdam region as part of its trip to Azerbaijan, AzerTac state news agency reported.
A meeting with professors Phillip Hopman, William Zartman and 18 students was held at the Agdam governor`s office.
The delegation was updated on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, plight of IDPs displaced from their homes as a result of Armenia`s aggression against Azerbaijan.
Armenian troops occupied 77 percent of the territory of the Agdam region including the town of Agdam itself, one settlement and 82 villages. Of 180 000 population of Agdam region, 143 000 were settled as IDPs in 62 regions and towns of the country.
Armenia continues to disregard four UN Security Council resolutions passed in 1993, demanding return of refugees and IDPs to their homes.
The government of Azerbaijan put large-scale measures in place to improve housing conditions of IDPs.
The Johns Hopkins University delegation was informed about the history of Karabakh, monuments of material culture, world famous musicians from this region. They also saw a documentary Caucasian Hirosima showing the sights of Agdam before and after occupation.
In an interview to journalists, Zartman said the aim of the visit is to learn more about the Nagorno-Karabakh region, the problem of IDPs, and the raise world community`s awareness of the conflict.
