Azerbaijan’s occupied lands in focus of UN

Draft resolutions “The situation in the occupied Azerbaijani territories” and “Protracted conflicts in the GUAM area and their implications for international peace, security and development” have been included in the agenda of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly. Draft agenda of the session has been published on the UN website.

The 71st session of the UN General Assembly will be held on September 13-26 in the New York headquarters of UN.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia still controls fifth part of Azerbaijan's territory and rejects implementing four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding districts.
