Georgia never to stop fighting for unification: president

By Jamila Babayeva

Georgia will never stop fighting for unification of the country.

President Giorgi Margvelashvili made the remark addressing the cadets, who sworn in at the Freedom Square in Tbilisi, on May 26, on the Independence Day of Georgia.

"Georgia's independence is still "fragile" with parts of its territory remaining under occupation. The state is not able to protect the rights of those citizens who live beyond the barbed wire fences in breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia," he said.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili urged the soldiers to support the Georgian army's traditions, and fulfil their duties both in Georgia and in the international missions till the end.

He stressed that Georgia is moving towards Europe, and the army plays its role in this direction in order to ensure the country's security.

Georgia suffers from unresolved conflicts. Tbilisi broke off relations with Moscow in August 2008 when Moscow crushed a Georgian assault to reassert control over two rebel regions -South Ossetia and Abkhazia- and later recognized the regions. Georgia announced the two unrecognized republics as occupied territories in September 2008.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by prime minister, the members of Georgian government, parliament and representatives of international delegations, as well as the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II and Georgian citizens.
