Baku hosts session on International North-South Transport Corridor

Baku hosted the fifth session of the Coordination Council on the International North-South Transport Corridor on June 24-25, the Azerbaijani Transport Ministry reported on Monday.

The event is attended by representatives from eight countries.

Speaking at the event Deputy Minister of Transport Musa Panahov said that Azerbaijan conducted continuous work in the development of transport infrastructure and integration into the international transport sector.

He went on to say that a new sea trade port in 60 kilometers of Baku is under construction. It will be put into operation in 2015.

The participants of the session heard the report of the secretary of theNorth-South corridor.

During the session representatives of Azerbaijan as well as the delegations from Iran, India, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Turkey and Syria held discussions on the railway, terrestrial and maritime transports.

The two-day session will mull the plans of development of the corridor, insurance, customs and other issues will be discussed during. Furthermore, the member-countries will adopt the report of the secretary and determine the date and place of the next session.

The International North-South Transport Corridor was established in 2000 by Iran, Russia and India in order to promote transportation cooperation among the members. Later Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, Belarus, Oman, Syria and Bulgaria joined the corridor.

Total length of the International North-South Transport Corridor is 7,200 km and it aims to transport passengers and cargos from the Indian and Persian Gulf to North and West Europe through Azerbaijan and Russia.
