The Geography Institute of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) will determine a possible connection between geographical factors and the spread of tuberculosis (TB) in the country.

Acting Director of the Institute Ramiz Mammadov said natural zones where conditions are suitable for the spread of tuberculosis will be defined and a map reflecting the situation in this regard will be prepared.

According to Mammadov, the studies will enable to determine the number of tuberculosis patients, their population by districts, natural conditions conducive to the spread of the disease, as well as its relation to the domestic conditions. Researchers will also determine whether or not there is a link between the growth in the number of TB patients and climate change.

The living conditions of patients as well as their housing and sanitary conditions will be analyzed based on medical statistics.

"Such factors as living on plains, river banks and on the seashore will be considered," Mammadov said.

Mammadov said during the research they will study whether the sick people live in dry or moist terrain.

"If it is revealed that with the increase of the moisture level the number of TB patients also increases, it will mean there is a connection between these two factors," he said.

Mammadov believes that the studies will help to organize the fight against TB in the country and to take preventive measures. The study is expected to take three to four years to complete.
