Azerbaijan’s power supply to Turkey depends on Georgia

Volumes of power supplies within the 'Energy Bridge Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey' project depend on transmission capacity in Georgia, Head of the Office for Strategic Development of Azerenergy (production and distribution of electricity in Azerbaijan) Rafael Abbasov said.

He said there are no problems with the power supply on the Azerbaijani side, as the generating capacities in the country may provide an excess.

Despite the uncertainty in the exact volume of electricity exports, possibility of exporting of 500 megawatts of electricity per year at the first stage is under consideration.

Electricity exports from Azerbaijan to Turkey are planned within the project by connecting the energy systems of these three countries.

To ensure the exports, it is necessary to reconstruct transmission lines to the Azerbaijani-Georgian border. In turn, the Georgian side needs to complete construction work on its territory.

The capacity of the power plants owned by Azerenergy exceeds 6,000 megawatts. The balance sheet of Azerenergy includes more than 200 substations with a capacity of 500, 330, 220 and 110 kV, as well as six hydroelectric and 13 thermal power plants.
