The 65th anniversary of India's Republic Day was celebrated in Azerbaijan.
The Indian Embassy in Azerbaijan held the Republic Day event on January 27 to commemorate the date on which the Constitution of India came into force.
After playing the national anthems of the two countries, India's Ambassador to Azerbaijan Vinod Kumar briefed the event participants on the country`s achievements in the various spheres, and touched upon the historically existing relations between the two countries.
Kumar noted India was one of the first countries to build diplomatic relations with Azerbaijan after it restored its independence.
India recognized the state independence of Azerbaijan on December 26, 1991. The diplomatic relations between two countries were established on February 28, 1992.
He expressed hope that the Azerbaijan-India ties would continue to develop.
On behalf of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Huseyngulu Baghirov congratulated the Indian people on the occasion of the holiday.
He said relations between Azerbaijan and India were steadily developing for the prosperity of the two countries` people.
Baghirov hailed the activity of the Azerbaijan-India Intergovernmental Commission.
He also noted that Azerbaijan attached great importance to development of relations with India.
The event brought together Azerbaijan`s state and government officials, as well as MPs, ambassadors of foreign countries, and public figures.
Then, the event continued with a concert of Indian music. The guests also tasted the Indian national dishes.
The Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950, replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.
The Constitution was passed by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949 but was adopted on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country's transition toward becoming an independent republic.
It is one of three national holidays in India, other two being Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti.
