Turkey, Azerbaijan work together on issues threatening peace and stability: official

Turkey-Azerbaijan relations were in focus of the talks between Azerbaijani Interior Minister, Colonel-General Ramil Usubov and a delegation led by the chief of Turkish National Police Mehmet Kılıclar, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan, on October 24.

Usubov said at the meeting that Kılıclar's visit will serve to further intensification of the cooperation between the interior ministries of the two countries.

The minister informed the delegation about the early years of Azerbaijan's independence and the crime situation in this difficult period. He added that all these problems were resolved under national leader Heydar Aliyev's guidance.

Usubov went on to say that legal framework of the police meeting European standards was created in the country. The conducted reforms received positive feedback from a number of reputable international organizations and experts.

He said the study of international experience and cooperation are being carried out systematically.

Thus, in recent years over 3,000 Azerbaijani police officers have undergone trainings and seminars in world countries including Turkey, through the Council of Europe, the OSCE and other international organizations.

Touching upon problems, Usubov said Azerbaijan is suffering from one of the main types of transnational crime, terrorism. He noted that the Armenian nationalists and terrorist groups have committed 32 terror attacks against Azerbaijanis.

Referring to the fight against such global problems as drug trafficking, human trafficking and illegal migration, Usubov said this fight cannot be waged alone, so, joint efforts of countries are important.

Mehmet Kılıclar, for his part, expressed his gratitude for the sincere and warm welcome and welcomed the cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkey.

He said the friendly and brotherly states always adhere to a common position and work together to address the problems posing obstacles to building peace and stability.

Kılıclar added that they are interested in the development and expansion of relations between the police authorities in the future.
