Turkmen president: CIS should continue constructive dialogue in energy sector

Constructive dialogue in the energy sector was continued, Turkmen President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has said at the Summit of the CIS Heads of States in Ashgabat, summarizing the outcome of his chairmanship in the CIS,Trend news agency reported on Thursday.

The Turkmen leader said in May during a meeting of the CIS Electric Power Council and in September at the International Oil and Gas Conference of the CIS member states views were exchanged on this issue, which was helpful for mutually beneficial cooperation.

"We expect that this practice will continue also in the future," Berdymukhamedov said.

Turkmenistan holds one of the key positions in the region on supply of natural gas. Importers are Russia, China and Iran.

On Wednesday, Berdymukhamedov also defined the development of transport and communication infrastructure of the CIS as one of the priorities of joint activity. In his view, the Commonwealth space has the most favorable conditions for establishment of international trade and economic corridors in the directions of "North-South" and "East-West".

Work on formation of new and efficient use of the existing networks of road, rail, air and maritime traffic among the CIS states is perspective in this regard.

Berdymukhamedov expressed his belief that ideas and proposals voiced during the 57th Conference of the CIS Council for Rail Transport in October, will contribute to the development of effective approaches to further broaden and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of railway transport, cargo and passenger traffic.

Speaking about possibilities of increasing foreign trade turnover by expanding the range of mutual exports and imports of goods and services, President Berdymukhamedov said that it is necessary to focus on the production of high-tech industries, the development of
new areas of production and services.
