National Library demonstrates ancient editions of Holy Quran

Azerbaijan’s National Library has opened its doors for the new exhibition featuring ancient editions of the Holy Quran.

The inauguration of the exhibitions was attended by Director of National Library, Ph.D Karim Tahirov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Women's Society Bahar Gasimova, Rector of Baku Islamic University, akhund of Heydar mosque Haji Sabir Hasanli and others.

Addressing the event, Tahirov noted that the three-day exhibition is devoted to the Year of Multiculturalism in Azerbaijan.

He said despite atheism policy pursued in the Soviet times, Azerbaijani people managed to keep their faith in God and the true values of Islam, which calls for charity, peace, friendship, justice and education.

The exhibition presents the ancient editions of the Quran that were saved in the Azerbaijani families in the country’s regions, he said.

Azerbaijan enjoys a tolerant atmosphere for different nations and religions. The state the national policy defined on the principles of tolerance and coexistence of various nationalities, ethnic groups and religious minorities.

The Holy Quran is the Holy Book of the Muslims and contains the law and commandments, codes for their social and moral behavior as well comprehensive religious philosophy.

Muslims believe the Quran was verbally revealed by God to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel, over a period of twenty three years.

The Holy Quran is divided into 114 Surahs or Chapters and each Chapter consists of individual Ayaat or verses. There are in total 6,348 verses in the Holy Quran.

Fragments of one of the world's oldest Quran manuscripts have recently been found by the UK's Birmingham University. The manuscripts, written on parchments, have been dated to from between AD 568 and 645.
