Armenia in full swing before Constitutional amendments

By Laman Sadigova

As the day of referendum on amendments to the Constitution is approaching, tensions in Armenia are growing as well.

The Armenian authorities, in the face of the ruling “Karabakh clan,” are leading intensive preparations for the transition to a parliamentary ruling system.

The Armenian National Assembly approved the constitutional reforms without any apparent reasons and social requirements.

Ideally, the parliamentary system is popular in many democratic countries and has dozens of positive elements. However, considering Armenian realities, it is difficult to speak seriously about success. Indeed, any system can be misinterpreted if it is used for private interests. Armenia, a nation famous for corruption, human rights violations and aggression towards its neighboring countries, is a shining example of this.

Despite numerous protests and the apparent reluctance of both the people and many politicians, it seems like the current government is not planning to stop. For instance, the authorities spent large amounts of money on preparing the referendum, while the country is sinking in debt.

Obviously, the aim of all of these reforms is the government's intention to maintain power and not to lose it.

The people’s cup of patience seems to already full and the situation in the country is getting worse. The opposition, which has traditionally been very weak in Armenia, is now is getting stronger as society demands changes. Now it seeks new methods of fighting the government and opposition members are even calling for a revolution. The people in Armenia are tired and full of anger and disagreement…

Opposition forces in Armenia, calling themselves “No,” are ready to fight against Constitutional amendments despite the government having power and money. The only way to make real change against the criminal government is to unite together.

During a presentation from the opposition National Salvation Front "New Armenia" on October 21, political activist Zhirayr Sefilyan said that the removal of the current government is impossible with “classical methods.”

“The suspension of the current regime can only be achieved with a national revolt, which is possible only by mobilizing people. And here we are facing problems,” he said.

The day of mobilization was announced for December 1.

He invited people to come to the square and warned them to be prepared for violence.
