OSCE official criticizes Swedish ‘genocide’ vote

Goran Lennmarker, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s special representative on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict, has described as wrong the Swedish parliament’s recent decision to brand the alleged killings of up to 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks as "genocide".
"Parliament should not assess historical events. This should be done by historians," Lennmarker, a Swedish lawmaker, has said on a visit to Baku.
Lennmarker said his views overlap with the Swedish government’s stance. "The Swedish government condemns this decision and considers it a blow to [the country’s] relations with Turkey."
Sweden's parliament, by a vote of 131-130, backed a resolution on the alleged genocide, a claim that Turkey resolutely rejects.
Armenians claim their forefathers were subjected to "genocide" during the resettlements of their ancestors to other parts of Turkey by the Ottoman government during World War I. Turkey’s decision aimed to end stand-off that emerged after Armenians residing in the Anatolia region started riots and fought against the Ottoman army in support of Russia.*
