The South Stream gas supply project to Europe will be discussed at an autumn high level meeting in Turkmenistan.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara said at a briefing in Tbilisi on June 18 that Ukraine initiated the consideration of the diversification of energy supplies to Europe.

Kozhara stressed that Ukraine intends to remain the most important transit corridor for Russian gas supplies to Europe. He said the country has the necessary potential capable of delivering up to 200 billion cubic meters of Russian gas.

However, he stressed that Ukraine is also considering the opportunity of diversifying gas supplies to that country.

"In this respect we consider the opportunity of South Stream, but this issue will be discussed in the autumn," he said.

Kozhara said the international conference will be held in Ashgabat on October 17-18 and be fully devoted to the discussion of alternative gas supplies to Europe.

"Georgia, which is also interested in the transit of Azerbaijani and Central Asian gas to Europe, was also invited to this forum," Kozhara said.
