Reports on EP’s friendship group with separatist Karabakh regime contradicts reality

Reports on the establishment of a friendship group between the European Parliament and the separatist regime of Nagorno-Karabakh contradicts the reality.

Azerbaijani Parliamentary Speaker Ogtay Asadov made the remark at the plenary session on October 17.

He said that this information was spread only by Armenian media outlets.

The speaker further said that the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh is like a toy in the hands of a number of countries and organizations.

The Azerbaijani side should be active in this issue, especially the Azerbaijani community of Nagorno-Karabakh, and prevent this, Asadov said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four U.N. Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
