The mayor of the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki visited Azerbaijan on November 12, Azerbaijani Youth and Sports Ministry said.

The visit by Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris is aimed at presenting the city's tourism potential in connection with its election as the European Youth Capital in 2014.

Another purpose of the visit is signing a number of projects with Azerbaijan in the aforementioned context.

The Greek delegation includes Advisor on Tourism of Urban Municipality Spyridon Pengas, Mayor Assistant Eleni Sotiriou, and Coordinator of the Project European Youth Capital Charalampos Papaioannou.

The visit includes discussion of cooperation in the field of youth and sports.

The European Youth Capital title is awarded to a European city for the period of one year, during which it will be given the chance to showcase, through a multi-faceted program, its youth-related cultural, social, political and economic life and development.

The project encourages the implementation of new ideas and innovative projects with regard to active participation of young people in society.

The first European Youth Capital was Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 2009. This year's award was given to Maribor, Slovenia, while the next year's award will go to Thessaloniki. Based on an expert jury selection, Cluj Napoca, Romania, will receive the title in 2015.

The selection procedure for 2016 has already begun.
