Azerbaijani Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova met Chief Advisor of South Caucasus Office of UN High Commission for Human Rights Vladimir Shkolnikov on August 1.

The Ombudsman apparatus reported that the successful cooperation of the Apparatus with the UN specialized agencies, including the High Commission for Human Rights and regional office of this structure was noted during the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, Suleymanova said that the 11th International Baku Conference of Ombudsmen, as well as public hearings in all regions of the republic in order to discuss "The National action program to increase the effectiveness of protection of human rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan Republic" and meetings with the representatives of governmental agencies, civil society, non-governmental organizations working in the sphere of human rights protection were held this year.

She also spoke about monitoring the implementation of recommendations for the process of "Universal Periodic Review" (UPR) and the participation of civil society institutions in this process.

During the meeting, Suleymanova presented a number of proposals corresponding with the priorities of UN High Commission for Human Rights.

Shkolnikov, in turn, expressed gratitude for high appreciation of cooperation with High Commission and stressed the active position of the ombudsman in UPR process.

He noted the significance of cooperation with the Ombudsman Apparatus and the willingness of UN High Commission for Human Rights to support the institution.

Moreover, the prospects of cooperation and other issues of mutual interest were discussed during the meeting.
