Rights of Azerbaijani IDPs mulled in Italy

Italian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights has held an international seminar on "Protection of IDPs in international humanitarian law: Azerbaijani issue" at the Chamber of Deputies of Italian Parliament.

According to Azerbaijan`s embassy in Italy, the event was opened by the secretary general of the Italian Helsinki Committee Antonio Stango.

Then, human rights expert Mauricio Gressi greeted the attendees on behalf of the president of the Chamber of Deputies Laura Boldrini.

Speaking to the event, the vice rector for cooperation and international relations of the Sapienza University of Rome Antonello Biagini touched upon the issue of Azerbaijani IDPs, and expressed importance for halt of large-scaled humanitarian crisis.

The attendees also heard reports made by secretary-general of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean Sergio Piazzi, deputy secretary general of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee Gunnar Slydal, researcher at the Sapienza University Alberto Becherelli, director for international partnership for human rights, based in Brussels, Brigitte Dufour, head of the humanitarian and social affairs department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Marat Kangarlinski and representative of UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Azerbaijan Dag Sigurdsson.

The reports cited the need for protection of the rights of those who became refugees as a result of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as successes of the reforms being conducted in Azerbaijan.

The attendees also touched upon the protection of the rights of refugees and IDPs of the conflicts in Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Syria.
