Azerbaijani president opens underpass tunnel in Baku

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev opened an underpass tunnel at the junction of Hasan Aliyev and Ataturk Avenues in Baku on December 28, AzerTac state news agency reported.
Ttransport Minister Ziya Mammadov reported to the President about the project of the road junctions of tunnel type.
The project envisages regulation of traffic at the territory of Galaba Square around Genjlik metro station and at the junctions in the area, as well as elimination of traffic jams and safer motion without traffic lights. Six road intersections in 2,470 m in length with six entrances, ten exits, as well as ten passages will be constructed within the framework of this project.
The road intersections will join Ataturk and Vagif Avenues, as well as Ataturk and Tabriz Avenues via Ahmad bay Agaoglu Street. The vehicles, thus, moving on Tabriz Avenue will be able to get out to Darnagul Highway via the tunnel without entering the Ganjlik circle. Also it will be possible to direct the cars to Khoyski Avenue by short turnings. The cars moving from Vagif Avenue will pass under Khoyski Avenue - through the would-be-constructed 3-storey underground parking, and enter Ataturk Avenue and finally move over Hasan Aliyev Avenue.
It was noted that the total area of roads to be constructed on the project averages 110,000 square meters. After completion of project, the traffic intensity in Galaba Square will increase. Road junction in Vagif Avenue crosses over the existing tunnel of Ganjlik metro station.
The tunnels can withstand a 9 magnitude earthquake. The infrastructure was renewed in accordance with the project. Communication lines were changed. Drilling works on project were completed by 80 percent, and underground drilling works by 100 percent.
According to the project, additional two pedestrian exits are planned to be constructed in Ganjlik station. Exit of Ganjlik station to Ataturk Avenue is planned to change to the centre of Galaba Square.
The head of state cut the ribbon symbolizing opening of the underpass tunnel.
Parameters of the underpass tunnel in the intersection of Hasan Aliyev and Ataturk Avenues: total length of the tunnel is 546 meters, width is 16.5 meters, and number of traffic strips is 4. Construction works are being conducted by "Akkord Industry Construction Investment Corporation" OJSC. Interior lighting system in the tunnel has been projected by Azerbaijani Progress Communication Company jointly with the Italian well-known design companies. The system is controlled by computer. The searchlight on the ceiling of tunnel operates in several regimes - daytime, night and emergency conditions. On the traffic strip, a lot of directional lights have been constructed. A generator is being used for energy supply of tunnel. After completion of construction, the existing park will be reconstructed.
After familiarization the President of Azerbaijan gave his certain instructions on the construction.
