Azerbaijani sambo wrestlers keep fighting for medals
Following the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the sambo events at the Baku 2015 European Games, seven of the eight Azerbaijani athletes will compete for medals.
Kanan Gasimov (-90 kg), Shahane Huseynova (-60 kg) and Narmina Alizada (-68 kg) will compete for the bronze medals.
Gasimov will face Georgia’s Davit Karbelashvili, while the other two Azerbaijani female athletes will have matches with Katsiaryna Prakapenka of Belarus and Celine Conde from France, respectively.
Four other Azerbaijani sambo wrestlers will fight for the gold medals.
Islam Gasumov (-57 kg) will face Aymergen Atkunov of Russia, whil Amil Gasimov (-74 kg) will have a fight with Stsiapan Papou of Belarus.
Azerbaijan’s Vasif Safarbayov, competing in the +100 kg sambo event at the Games, will face Russia’s Artem Osipenko, while the female sambo wrestler Nazakat Khalilova (-52 kg) will try to overcome the Russian athlete Anna Kharitonova.
The European Games that kicked off June 12, will last till June 28. There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports.
More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe came to Baku to represent their nations over 17 days of competition. Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
