Russian FM says better ties with Turkey to be positive for overcoming Syria crisis

Improvement of relations between Russia and Turkey will have a positive and effective impact on overcoming the Syrian crisis, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

He made the remarks July 12 at a joint press conference with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku.

Mammadyarov, for his part, said the normalization of the Russia-Turkey relations was among the topics discussed during Lavrov’s visit in Baku.

Baku welcomes the creation of good relations between its neighbors, he added.

The relations between Russia and Turkey deteriorated after the Su-24 bomber incident in 2015. On June 27, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent a letter of condolences to Putin over the death of Russian Su-24 pilot and expressed regret over the incident.

Further during the meeting, Lavrov touched upon the relations between Russia and Azerbaijan, noting that the relations cannot be affected by any conjuncture.

Earlier, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, commenting on the improvement of relations between Turkey and Russia, thanked Azerbaijan for its contribution to normalization of the relations.
