Kazakh law enforcers exchange fire with suspected militants in Aktoba

Law enforcers in the western Kazakhstani town of Aktoba are conducting a special operation against militants, who reportedly put up an armed resistance after asked to surrender, the anti-terrorism center of the country's National Security Committee reported on Friday, TASS reported.

According to the information provided by the anti-terrorism center, the special operation is conducted with the aim to detain people suspected of involvement in terrorist attack in Aktoba last Sunday.

"When asked to surrender, the militants responded with armed resistance," the statement from the center said, adding that "security was provided for the local population during the special operation."

On Sunday, June 5, an armed group of people staged assaulted arms depots and a National Guard unit in Kazakhstan's city of Aktoba killing six people, including three military servicemen.

According to Kazakhstan's Ministry of Health and Social Development, 38 people were hospitalized as a result of the terrorist attacks sustaining wounds of various degrees.

The country's Interior Ministry later reported that thirteen suspected militants were killed and four more wounded in the ensuing anti-terrorist operation while six suspects were put on the wanted list.

After the regime of counter-terrorist operation was imposed in the Aktoba region on Sunday, the National Security Committee declared a "yellow level" of terrorist alert for the rest of the country's regions for the period of 40 days.

Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev assumed personal control over the situation in Aktoba.
