The current global crisis has significantly influenced the cargo turnover via the CIS network, which has fallen by 1.7 percent over the nine month of 2015.

Speaking at the 63rd session of the Council in Tashkent, Oleg Belozerov, the chairman of the Rail Transport Council of the CIS countries and president of the Russian Railways, noted that the combined network of CIS countries' railways carried 1.4 billion tons of cargo in the first nine months of 2015, which was 1.5 percent higher than the commitments made by the railway administrations of these CIS countries.

The volume of container freight shipping dropped by almost 6 percent, falling by up to 20 million tons compared to the same period in 2014.

The number of passengers carried via international flights declined by up to 14.8 million people, or 64 percent of the shipping volume, compared to the same period last year.

“Today, the Council’s main task is to work out harmonized terms and principles for rail transport’s activities while meeting the needs of international traffic to ensure the functioning and development of transport and economic ties between the CIS members and to adopt normative documents,” Batir Zakirov, deputy prime minister of Uzbekistan, stated while opening the meeting.

The meeting was attended by the Council members – heads of railway administrations of the CIS countries -- and the Council’s associate members – heads of the railway administrations of Georgia, Latvia, Bulgaria, and Finland.

Consideration of the results of operating the railway network for the first nine months of 2015, mutual settlements between the railway administrations, and the development of a train schedule for 2015/2016 are provided for in the agenda of the Council's meeting.
