Kazakh national carrier Air Astana and Germany’s Lufthansa signed a codeshare agreement, the Kazakh airline said in a message March 15.

A codeshare agreement is an aviation business arrangement where two or more airlines share the same flight. A seat can be purchased on each airline's designator and flight number, but is operated by only one of these cooperating airlines, commonly called the operating carrier.

The agreement is valid for the Astana-Frankfurt-Astana flights carried out by Air Astana, and the Frankfurt-Almaty-Frankfurt and the Frankfurt-Astana-Frankfurt flights carried out by Lufthansa.

The agreement provides more opportunities to passengers of both airlines and will be especially advantageous for transit passengers.

Now passengers can choose out of any 14 flights per week, carried out by both airlines between Kazakhstan and Germany. Previously passengers chose of 7 flights per week carried out by one of these airlines.

Air Astana has been operating since 2002, and today it has a fleet of 30 aircraft of western production. Its route network includes over 60 international and regional destinations.

Lufthansa is the largest German airline and, when combined with its subsidiaries, also the largest airline in Europe, in terms of fleet size, and the second largest airline in terms of passengers carried during 2016. It operates services to 18 domestic destinations and 197 international destinations in 78 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe, using a fleet of more than 270 aircraft.
