Turkmen transport strategy is of long-term nature: president

One of the important goals of the dialogue aimed at development of transportation in the world is to create an appropriate transport, transit and logistics system in Central Asia and the Caspian region, said the Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

He made the remarks addressing the opening ceremony of the UN global conference on sustainable transport that kicked off in Ashgabat November 26.

Creation of this system will allow reaching sea terminals of the Black Sea and Baltic regions, South and South-East Asia, terminals of the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region, according to the Turkmen president.

“Next year, we will commission the region’s largest road and rail bridges across the Amu Darya River, connecting the transport hubs of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan and significantly speeding up traffic flow in both directions,” Berdimuhamedov added.

Turkmenistan’s transport strategy is of long-term nature and is based on the use of geographical advantages, logistics opportunities and infrastructure to create the largest transport hubs of regional and continental importance, according to the president.

“Therefore, Turkmenistan together with its partners is carrying out a number of large international projects in the region,” Berdimuhamedov said.

The recently commissioned Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railroad is capable of transporting up to 10-12 million tons of cargo per year, the Turkmen president added.
