Azerbaijan, Iran eye bilateral ties

The development of Azerbaijani-Iranian ties in several spheres was mulled as Azerbaijani Ambassador to Iran met with Iranian parliamentarian, the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran told Trend Agency.

Javanshir Akhundov and member of the Islamic Consultative Council (Parliament) and Chairman of the 'Iran-Azerbaijan' inter-parliamentary friendship group Ramazanali Sobhanifar discussed prospects for further development of bilateral relations in the economic and cultural spheres between Azerbaijan and Iran

Akhundov appreciated the role of inter-parliamentary relations and especially the friendship groups in bringing bilateral relations to a higher level.

He stressed that a delegation led by Azerbaijani Parliament's Speaker Oqtay Asadov will visit Tehran soon to attend the ninth meeting of chairmen of the Parliaments of OIC member countries.

The Azerbaijani delegation includes members of the 'Azerbaijan - Iran' inter-parliamentary friendship group.

Iran and Azerbaijan have had diplomatic relations since 1918. Iran recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992.
