An essay contest on "Environmental Protection" among students of secondary schools in the Russian southern city of Astrakhan has been launched at the initiative of Vice President of Azerbaijan's Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva, Azerbaijani state news agency AzerTac reported.

Mrs. Aliyeva, who chairs the Azerbaijani Youth Organization of Russia (AYOR), suggested conducting the contest during her meeting with members of the organization's regional branch at a school named after Azerbaijani national leader Heydar Aliyev in Astrakhan province on September 12. Aliyeva noted that AYOR had more than 60 regional branches, adding that the Astrakhan representation was one of the most active ones.

During the visit the Foundation vice president also met Astrakhan Region Governor Alexander Zhilkin. Aliyeva told the Astrakhan Governor that AYOR planned to implement several projects in the province as part of the International Dialogue for Environmental Action, IDEA, in particular, an essay competition among senior grade students, and Gov. Zhilkin welcomed the proposal.

The contest is organized jointly by the Foundation, AYOR and Astrakhan province's administration for 9th, 10th and 11th grade students. The competition will end on New Year's eve, December 31, which is the Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis. Winners will be awarded diplomas and gifts.
