PM: Latvia wants to expand economic cooperation with Azerbaijan (UPDATE)
Latvia wants to move and expand the economic cooperation with Azerbaijan, in particular to facilitate trade and investment, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis said during a roundtable "Cooperation of Latvia, EU and Azerbaijan, and future prospects" at the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy in Baku on Thursday, Trend news agency reported.
"We are also looking forward to expand cooperation in the field of education," he said.
He said there is quite large potential for discussions in this field.
"We support the dialogue between the EU and Azerbaijan, and we support the EU's engaging in the Eastern Partnership. There is a good possibility to use even more twinning projects and good possibility for cooperation in this sphere by using the EU funds," he underlined.
Rector of the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy Hafiz Pashayev also made speech during the event.
"We are glad to have a chance to change views on building education between Latvia and Azerbaijan. We are the only university in Azerbaijan, which provides fellowship programs for international students," Pashayev said.
Relations between Azerbaijan and Latvia are developing year by year, Pashayev added.
"Our university is trying to turn into university of a new quality. This is the only university in the country, where practice of using alternative energy is available," he said.
During the discussions the energy issues were also touched upon.
Addressing the event Andrejs Pildegovics, political director at the Latvian Foreign Ministry, said that the partnership in energy field is one of key topics of the discussions between the two countries.
He said that Azerbaijan is a big energy player in the region.
Latvia is interested to have more vision of events in the region, he added.
