The new U.S. line on Syria raises many questions for Moscow.

This was stated by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a press conference following a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim al-Jaafari on October 23, TASS reported.

"Hearing about a new line of the United States that involves the creation of some local councils in the territory of the sovereign Syrian Arab Republic, of course, raises many questions for us. We are sending these questions to Washington and expecting that we will receive an honest and understandable answer," he noted.

The diplomat also drew attention to some "strange things" that are taking place in the activities of the American-led coalition in Syria.

"There were numerous cases when during the periods of the Syrian army's attack on the positions of the ISIS militants, the same fighters, from the areas controlled by the United States-sponsored coalition, quietly went out and directed to provide additional resistance to the Syrian government army," he explained. , there were cases of mass exodus of Igilovites from Rakki at the very moment when a coalition supported by the United States led the siege of this city. "

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said that the actions of the international coalition "will soon move into a new phase." They will support local security forces, reduce violence across Syria and create proper conditions for lasting peace so that "the terrorists could not return and again threaten our collective security," he noted.

Syria has been locked in civil war since March 2011. According to UN's special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, around 400,000 people have died in the conflict while half the population has been driven from their homes.
