Minister of Defense Colonel General Zakir Hasanov and the Defense Ministry’s officials visited military units in the frontline zone under instruction of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ilham Aliyev, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry’s press service said in a message March 6.

The minister and other officials laid flowers at the monument to national leader Heydar Aliyev in the territory of a military unit.

Later, after visiting the units deployed on the frontline, Hasanov observed the frontline positions of the enemy.

After familiarizing with the operational situation, Colonel General Hasanov checked the combat readiness of formations and units.

The leadership of the Defense Ministry highly appreciated the combat readiness, logistic support, weapons, ammunition and military equipment of the troops, as well as the moral-psychological readiness of military personnel.

Servicemen told the defense minister about their readiness to liberate the occupied Azerbaijani territories.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
