Baku International Sea Trade Port, expecting to become one of the leading trade and logistics hubs of Eurasia, intends to obtain the status of the first Green Port in the territory of the CIS.
Taleh Ziyadov, the port's general director, told journalists that receiving this status would mean that the Baku Port would be more environmentally friendly and equipped with various modern technologies and infrastructure to use energy efficiently.
“The Baku International Sea Trade Port is aiming to become the most environmentally friendly port in the region,” he said. “Today, modern ports are built with such infrastructure and state-of-the-art technologies that are less harmful to environment.”
Ziyadov mentioned that Azerbaijan is closely cooperating with the European Union in this regard.
Baku International Sea Trade Port, with expected 7,660 tons on a daily basis capacity, provides for the implementation of a program to reduce the waste of various port operations, through the reuse of materials, recycling and composting, by using various effective technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
This program presupposes the management, processing and liquidation of all emissions generated during the operation of the port, in connection with which appropriate treatment facilities and equipment will be installed in the port territory.
Within the long-term perspective, the Green Port program is envisaged to achieve permanent environmental, social and economic benefits, thanks to resource savings, waste reduction and pollution prevention.
The Port of Baku is located on an area of 400 hectares of land, of which about 100-115 ha cover the area for the development of the international Logistics and Trade Zone. The northern areas around the port are reserved for future expansion of logistics, industrial, and manufacturing activity.
The general director of the Port further said that transshipment of cargo through the Baku International Sea Trade Port with the launch of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is initially projected at the level of 1 million tons per year.
The official opening ceremony of the BTK railway, constructed on the basis a Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish intergovernmental agreement and with 17 million tons of cargo capacity per year was held on October 30 in Baku.
He added that the implementation of such international projects as Lapis Lazuli, TRACECA, "North-South" and their passage through the territory of Azerbaijan, is of great importance for the transformation of the country into a transport hub.
“BTK is a special project for the port, since the main cargo transshipments will be carried out directly here. The opening of the Kars-Akhalkalaki branch gives the opportunity to ship cargo to the Turkish Mersin, the Mediterranean Sea ports and to Europe, and from there to Central Asia and China,” Ziyadov stressed.
He went on to say that the construction in the first phase of the port will be completed in the middle of next year, further adding that as a result of the launch of the first phase, the port will be able to handle up to 15 million tons of cargo, which is a large tonnage that creates opportunities in the next 2-3 years to regulate cargo flows from Europe to Asia and back.
The second phase of construction of the Baku International Sea Trade Port envisages the construction of three more cargo berths in the port, and in the third stage two additional cargo berths will be built.
