The tourism opportunities of Italy, particularly the Lake Garda, the largest of the country’s fresh-water lakes, were presented within the I.T.W. Italian Travel Workshop in Baku on November 22.

Speaking at the event, Italian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Giampaolo Cutillo said that the decline in the number of Azerbaijani tourists to Italy was observed in early 2016, expressing hope that this trend will not continue in 2017.

"In 2015, we issued about 10,000 visas to Azerbaijani citizens. In 2016 we had a decline of 50 percent. In general, this year we expect a decline of 20 percent. I hope that in 2017 we will see rise in the number of tourists, and return back to level of the previous year," he said.

The Lake Garda is long and slim lake with a southern shore of low, rolling hills, and a contrasting northern end which is surrounded by towering mountains. The country’s most visited lake blessed with a benign climate and diversity of landscape.

Tourists traveling here will find plenty of excursions and activities to keep them entertained year-round -- everything from visiting hilly wine regions to exploring 14th-century castles. The towns and communities surrounding Lake Garda offer easy day trips from Venice, easily accessible by car or train.

Marco Benedetti,a representative of the Region, said that every year about 22 million of tourists visit the Lake, which has dazzling nature , as well as a wide range of interesting adventures.

He also noted that last year, about a thousand of Azerbaijanis visited the Lake Garda.

The region has more than 6,000 accommodations and 1,100 hotels, 12 of which are 5-star and 170 are 4-star hotels.

He noted that apart from the recreational potential, the region also has many historical monuments, medieval castles and museums. The region is also famous for exciting sport activities including earth, air and water.
