Primoz Roglic soloed in to victory on the queen stage of the Tour d’Azerbaidjan, claiming the second consecutive stage wins for his Adria Mobil team on May 7, Azerbaijan’s Cycling Federation reported.

The second place went to Matej Mugerli (Synergy Baku Cycling Project) and third place to Christopher Horner (Airgas-Safeway).

Roglic, who won this same stage in 2014, has been part of a break group, which formed just before the first of three climbs on this second stage. The group eventually went from 16 riders to two, with Roglic dropping Mugerli on the final climb, ranked Cat. 1.

"I tried to get away on the last climb, that happened and then I held on till the finish line,” Roglic said. “This win means a lot for me, it's nice to win again after last year. I'm really happy. Of course, we will try to keep the jersey till the end of this Tour d'Azerbaidjan, but there are some hard stages coming up. But I hope to keep it."

The Slovenian also won the mountain jersey, although he was tied on points with Alexander Surutkovych (Synergy Baku Cycling Project), who won the two earlier Cat. 2 climbs. The sprint jersey went to Maksym Averin (Baku Cycling Project), who won today's two intermediate sprints.

It was another overcast day, as the peloton left from the VeloPark in Baku and took off on the 187 kilometer Queen Stage to Ismayilli. There were multiple attempts to form break groups, but none of the early ones were successful.

Azerbaijan’s Synergy Baku Cycling Project at the Tour d’Azerbaidjan includes Elchin Asadov, Maksym Averin, Samir Jabrayilov, Matej Mugerli, Alexander Surutkovych, and Ioannis Tamouridis.

Matej Mugerli continued the impressive performance of the Synergy Baku Cycling Project in the Tour d’Azerbaidjan, finishing second on the second stage.

“It was a hard stage but everything went well,” Mugerli said. “There were three of us in the break group, which was good. I am happy with my results and would like to thank my teammates who helped me very much.”

The third stage of the race covers Gabala - Sheki - Gabala route of 177.2 km. Gabala is situated in the country’s north-west at the foot of the Shahdagh mountain.
