The Azerbaijani parliament intends to make amendments to the law on sport in an effort to toughen the measures against hooligans.

The key goals of the amendments are preventing sports fans from using a violence against sportsmen during sports competitions and mass sporting events.

Rauf Aliyev, Member of the Parliament, said the offered changes are planned to be made to the Law on Physical Education and Sports.

He noted that the amendments aim to prevent violation cases during sports competitions and mass sporting events, as well as to ensure public safety and tranquility.

"Fans once threw glass bottles to the sportsmen. It was further banned and only plastic bottles were allowed inside the sports arenas and turnstiles were installed at the entrances. There some violation facts about fans' attacks to the athletes. The law will regulate all the similar cases," Aliyev said.

He added that the detailed information about the measures to be taken in this regard will be given in near future.

"Detailed information will be given as soon as the amendments are discussed and coordinated with appropriate sports organizations and specialists, as well as the relevant committee of the Parliament," Aliyev said.

The new amendments will be good for Azerbaijani football, although there are no serious facts of violation, Nurlan Ibrahimov, Spokesman for Qarabag FC, a local football club told AzerNews.

"Such kind of laws could be significant in the countries where the fans regularly turn to violation. Fans in Azerbaijan are not offensive towards the sportsmen. That's why, I think the changes to the law will not widely affect the football in Azerbaijan. Moreover, it will not have any impact on the number of fans gathering in stadiums. As for football, no any significant change is expected following the amendments," Ibrahimov noted.

He added that the changes could be important in regard to the upcoming European Games competition to be held in Baku this summer.

"Such kinds of measures against fans are very effective during mass sporting events like the European Games. Since the Azerbaijani authorities aim to ensure high-level safety and security during the first European Games in, the new law would be an essential part of these efforts," Ibrahimov noted.

Azerbaijani is regularly hosting various sports events of local and international significance. Security of the athletes is one of the key points to attach a special attention to. In this case, the amendments to the law will primarily facilitate the protection of the sportsmen and regulate the behavior of fans.
