2014, successful year for Paralympic athletes

In 2014, Azerbaijani athletes won several medals in many championships and Paralympic athletes gained a number of awards as well.

Paralympic sports complex in Sumgayit hosted a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Azerbaijan National Paralympic Committee.

Opening the meeting, Ilgar Rahimov, President of the NPC, spoke about the works of the committee in 2014, the progress achieved, the competitions held in the country and abroad. He also praised the works of sports clubs established in the regions.

He wished the athletes and personnel representing the National Paralympic Committee a good luck during the first European Games to be held in Baku in 2015.

Shaig Hamidov, Vice President of the NPC, spoke about the objectives and plans for 2015.

At the end, an award ceremony with valuable prizes was held for the athletes and coaches who achieved success in 2014.

Azerbaijani Paralympic athletes won two gold, five silver, and three bronze medals in the sixth International Athletics Competitions. Azerbaijan's Dmitry Saley won gold medal in the 200m race in the IPC European Swimming Championships.

Moreover, Azerbaijani Paralympic athlete Gunduz Ismayilov updated the European record in powerlifting at the championship in the Brazilian city of Uberlandia. He lifted a 197 kg barbell in the 88 kg weight category.

Azerbaijani Paralympic athletes are developing every year achieving more success. Currently, they are taking part in 10 sports competitions. Moreover, the world's first Children's Paralympic Committee was established in Azerbaijan in September 2013.

Paralympic athletes participated in the 10th Atlanta Summer Paralympic Games in 1996 for the first time in the history of Paralympic sports in Azerbaijan with two athletes representing two sports.

During the summer 2012 Paralympic Games in London they gained 12 medals and became 27th among 166 countries. At the Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008, Azerbaijan won 10 medals, ranking 37th.
