The Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan appointed Croatian football specialist Robert Prosinecki as the manager of the Azerbaijani national football team, on December 3.

The AFFA Executive Committee signed a three-year contract with the new coach to start new spell in Azerbaijani football.

Prosinecki is Croatian football manager and former football midfielder. He is said to be a player with best technique that ever played in and for Croatia. He is also one of the few footballers, who have played for the archrival giants of the Spanish football FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Prosinecki worked as assistant manager of the Croatian national football team after retiring from active football. He started to manage the Serbian club Red Star Belgrade in 2010 and took over the Turkish club Kayserispor in 2012.

AFFA Executive Committee Member Iskandar Javadov said Prosinecki will be paid 1.2 million euros per year.

“Our main goal is to achieve success in the next qualifying stage,” Javadov said.

He went on to say that Prosinecki, unlike the former manager of Azerbaijani national football team Berti Vogts, will reside in Azerbaijan.

AFFA President Rovnag Abdullayev said the new manager has been assigned with concrete tasks.

"Holding of major sporting events in Azerbaijan is the greatest desire of our president. If we succeed to attend Euro-2020, then two games of our national team will be held here in our country," Abdullayev added.

The AFFA has earlier revealed Prosinecki's appointment as the manager, however, the official decision to bring him to Azerbaijan was adopted on December 3.

Berti Vogts resigned on October 17 after the 0-6 defeat against the Croatian team. Losing against Croatia was the second consecutive defeat following the national team's 1-2 defeat by Italy to finalize Vogts's resignation.
