Winners of the youth sport climbing competition were announced in Baku.

Organized by Air and Extreme Sports Federation of Azerbaijan (FAIREX) and held in the ClimBaku sport climbing center, the competition involved more than 80 athletes from 20 clubs.

Called "Umid", the competition was aimed at popularizing the sport among teenagers and young people and also making preparations for the World Sport Climbing Cup, which will be held in Baku on May 3-4.

Winners of the competition and prizewinners were awarded with diplomas and valuable prizes by Fizuli Musayev and Orkhan Mansurov, the representatives of the sports club of Azerbaijan's Emergency Situations Ministry.

The winners were selected in speed climbing, bouldering, and team competition.

In speed-climbing, Shamil Inchiev, Atabey Khanlarov, and Fuad Abdullayev won the male competition, and Fidan Novruzova, Azada Musabayli, and Lala Altukhanova won the female competition.

In a series of short, extremely difficult routes, Fuad Abdullayev, Gorkmaz Gadirli, and Anton Pupov won the male competition, and Azada Musabayli, Susan Aliyeva, and Fidan Novruzova won the female competition.

The best in the team competition was the "Ekstremal" sports club, the "AMEAST" team, and "Qerb Universiteti".

Baku hosted the eighth stage of the IFSC Climbing World Cup in June last year; 69 athletes from 11 countries took part in it.

Sport climbing is a form of rock climbing that relies on permanent anchors fixed to the rock, and possibly bolts, for protection.

In contrast, the rock is typically devoid of fixed anchors and bolts in traditional climbing and climbers must use removable protection as they climb. Since the need to place protection is essentially eliminated, sport climbing places an emphasis on gymnastic-like ability, strength, and endurance.

National championships on sport climbing have been regularly held in Azerbaijan since 2009, and local and foreign athletes take part in them.
