Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships held in Baku

Azerbaijan's capital hosted the 21st National Championships on rhythmic gymnastics on April 12.

The event, held in the Olympic Sports Complex, brought together 112 gymnasts competing in five age categories. Both juniors and those born in 2002-2006 participated in the championship.

Jamila Ibragimova (Baku Flames, 8.75 points) became the first, Jahan Asadova (Neftchi, 7.95 points) ranked the second, and Elmira Mamedova (Baku Flames, 7.65 points) became the third in the category of those born in 2006.

Among those born in 2005 Elnara Jabbarova (BGM, 8.35 points) ranked first, Seljan Hajizadeh (RKiM, 8.2 points) became second and Ragimakhanim Aslanli (Baku Flames, 8.2 points) became third.

Arzu Jalilova (Neftchi 9.85 points), Zarifa Bashirova (Baku Flames, 9.5 points) and Narmina Samedova (RKiM, 8.8 points) became 1st, 2nd and 3d respectively among those born in 2004, while Vafa Hasanzadeh (Neftchi, 22.4 points) became first, Sona Rakhmanova (Neftchi, 20.9 points) - second and Maryam Safarova (Neftchi, 20.3 points) - third in the category of those born in 2002-2003.

For the first time, eight teams competed simultaneously, competing for medals only in absolute all-around.

Along with the gymnasts of the "Neftchi", "Spartak", and "Sarhadchi" clubs, Baku Gymnastics School, Republican Complex Sports School, the country's Interior Ministry's sports community, athletes of the "Baku Flames" club, Children and Youth Creativity Center, "Shagan" sports complex, and "Ojag" sports club participated in the event.

The 21st Azerbaijan's Championships on rhythmic gymnastics will also be held in the Baku-based National Gymnastics Arena on April 19.

The competition will bring together 26 gymnasts, both seniors and those who were born in 1999-2001. Gymnasts will compete for medals in both absolute all-around and the individual events.

Azerbaijan's champion Marina Durunda and her main rivals Lala Yusifova, Gulsum Shafizade, and Nilufar Niftalyeva will also perform in the arena which will host the European Championships on Rhythmic Gymnastics on June 13-15.

This championship will become a kind of test tournament for Azerbaijan that is bracing for holding the European Championships. Athletes from over 30 countries will take part in the European Championships.

They will be accommodated in the future Olympic Village which is under construction. It is being built for the first European Games 2015, which will be held in Baku.
