The decision of the International Cycling Union to hold the “BMX Racing” World Championship on June 5-9 in Baku is another victory of Azerbaijan’s sport policy, Yagub Eyyubov, the country’s First Deputy Prime Minister said.

He made the remarks at the first meeting of the Organizing Committee of BMX World Championship, the Cycling Federation reported on December 13.

Eyyubov, who is also the chairman of the Committee, noted that this decision is another high assessment international federations gave to all the works carried out in Azerbaijan, including the successes achieved in sports and physical education.

Noting that the championship will be another important event in the sporting life of Azerbaijan, the chairman stressed the importance of implementing a high-level and fully prepared plan of action to please the guests who will come to the country.

Then, the Deputy Minister of Taxes, First Vice-President of the Cycling Federation Sahib Alakbarov gave a detailed presentation and informed about the preparatory work for the World Championship.

It was noted at the meeting that over 30 countries have so far requested participation in the championship and this number is growing.

Eyyubov stressed the importance of mobilizing all forces for holding the competitions at a high level and noted that instructions and recommendations were given to heads of state structures involved in organizing championship.

BMX World Championships are the competitions for BMX (bicycle motorcross) racing held under the regulations of the International Cycling Union, the sport's international governing body.

The championships are held annually and the winner of each event is crowned the BMX Cycling World Champion. The UCI awards a gold medal and a rainbow jersey to the winner, who wears the jersey until the following year's championship.

Azerbaijan has already gained its international recognition as a sports country. Over the past few years, the country hosted 2015 First European Games, 2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe, 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games, several gymnastics championships and chess tournaments as well as a number of other sports events.
